Cacao vs. Cocoa
Cacao is the raw, less-processed form of cocoa, and it contains no added sugars or preservatives. We've included 100% cacao chips in both of our bars for powerful antioxidants that support heart, blood sugar and brain health. These antioxidants include epicatechins, phytochemicals and flavanoids to fight the damage done by the environmental stressors we encounter every day. Additionally, cacao contains four B vitamins: thiamine, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and folate, calcium, iron and antioxidant vitamin E.
In contrast, cocoa's antioxidant and enzyme content is reduced after processing, which is often done using an alkaline chemical solution to improve the taste. Post-processing, cocoa is left with fewer antioxidants to fight environmental damage. Sugar and chemical additives are often included to further improve taste. Despite this reduction in nutrients, choosing Dutch-processed or organic cocoa can reduce the amounts of added sugar and chemicals in the finished product.
We've chosen to use less-processed cacao and organic cocoa in both of our bars to preserve the many benefits of cacao's antioxidants, without all the sugar and additives. Simply adding one or two superfoods to a healthy diet regimen can support your body's natural ability to fight daily damage that can contribute to disease later on. Regular consumption of cacao specifically can support blood sugar balance, mental stamina, heart health and blood circulation.
